Dr Suresh Choraria, qualified at the Royal College of Physicians (UK), is a Kolkata, India based cardiologist who specialises in an array of cardiac conditions including, angina, heart valve disease, coronary artery disease, cardiac rhythm management and lifestyle interventions. He also treats patients for cardiovascular risk assessment, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and pre and post operative cardiac assessment.
In a career spanning more than thirty years, Dr Choraria’s steadfast dedication towards appropriate cardiac care to patients has made him one of the country’s renowned Interventional Cardiologists. He has acquired extensive knowledge in the areas of prevention, wellness and treatment of heart disease. His primary interest is in preventive heart disease and he specializes in angioplasty and pacemakers.
An alma mater of Don Bosco School, he studied medicine from Calcutta National Medical College and went on to gain his MRCP from Royal College of Physicians, UK in 1982. Having received extensive training in interventional cardiology, under the mentorship of Dr J Pilcher, in George Elliot Hospital (UK) and Walsgrave Hospital (UK), he returned to India and took up a consultant post in Apollo Hospital, Madras (Chennai) in 1988. His desire to be closer to home brought him back to Kolkata in 1990 where he had a long association with the B M Birla Heart Research Centre (till 2004). After a stint of two years as the Cardiology lead in Suraksha Hospital (now AMRI), Dr Choraria was appointed the Director of Interventional Cardiology in Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital Ltd in 2006.
Dr Choraria has performed over twenty five thousand catheterisation procedures, many of which are significantly remarkable in the field of intervention. Several cardiologists have gained specialized interventional skills under his guidance. He has participated in various clinical trials and has been published widely in a large number of authoritative medical journals.
Dr Choraria’s clinical interests are in interventional cardiology, including angiography, angioplasty and stenting, permanent pacemakers, biventricular pacemakers, ICDs. His research interest is in creating awareness on how lifestyle factors such as diet, obesity, physical exercise can influence heart healthy living.
